Curves Keep Rolling

The Curves had to fight off the rust and some poor ice conditions as they beat Pega-Corn 4-3 on Tuesday night at the Rutherford Arena.  The Curves after starting the season with three loses, are now 4-1-1 in their last six and are currently riding a three game winning streak.  Paul Russell was named first star as he made numerous saves in the final minutes to avoid a Pega-Corn comeback.

Brad Williams, Brenan Smith, Danny Robertson and Josh Stone all scored for the Liberal Curves.  Their next game is Saturday at 2:30 pm.

Curves end 2009 in fashion

Sporting their new look (new jerseys; see previous post), the Curves came out slow once again but gained momentum and finished the season with a hard fought victory over the WCVM Vipers winning 5 - 3.  The Vipers caught the Curves sleeping five minutes in and got an early two goal lead beating Curves goalie Russell on the blocker side both times.

"They got a couple weak goals on me", said Russell.  Russell then turned it on continuing to show his emergence as an elite goalie.  He is currently on a three game unbeaten streak and is helping the Curves climb the ranks in the "D" division.

The Curves made their comeback shortly after falling behind by two.  Randy Johnson was denied on a breakaway but on the ensuing faceoff ripped home a wrist shot from the right side going blocker side on the Viper goalie.  Brad Williams then connected on a nice deke goal and later setup rushing defensemen McKee for a nice give and go to put the Curves ahead 3-2 going into the final period.

In the second the Vipers tied it on some good forechecking as a player was left alone in front who quickly slid it past Russell into a wide open net.

Brennan Smith quickly countered and Williams added an insurance goal finishing off the scoring.  Russell twice made sliding across the net saves keeping the Curves ahead and time ran out for a Vipers comeback.

The game showed some physical play with both teams getting some penalties.  In the final seconds of the game the Vipers were applying some strong zone pressure before Randy Johnson was finally able to clear the puck over the blue line.  Johnson and a Viper player collided on the play prompting another Viper to come in and two hand cross check Johnson in the back of the neck while he was down.  The play was quickly broken up as the teams came together and the buzzer sounded to end a hard fought emotional game.  The league will review the play and make a ruling in the coming weeks.

After the game the Curves celebrated making Jost (pronounced Yo-st) Neilson an honorary Curve presenting him with two Liberal Curves stickers for his hockey helmet.  Jost spent his second game on the Curves bench (with his helmet on) cheering on his father and team enforcer, (Nicklas) Woody Neilson who led the Curves with 6 penalty minutes in the contest and some great back checking.

As this marked the last game of 2009 for the Curves it hasn't marked the end of "Movember" and numerous Curves were sporting some nice "staches".  It is not too late to donate as a few days remain in November so get your donations in quick as they are for a good cause.

Curves rout Law 2 with balanced attack

The Curves started off slow but quickly turned a highly anticipated match up into a no contest.  The Robertson (2G, 1A) - Williams (2G) - Smith (2G, 1A) line combined for 8 points and helped the Curves rout Law 2 by a score of 8-2.

Curves goaltender, Paul Russell had another impressive showing turning away numerous chances and grabbing his first win of the season.  "Next game I am going for the shut-out," cracked first star Russell.

Brad Williams started off the scoring on a breakaway goal minutes into the game.  Law 2 quickly countered, making it look like a game, before the Curves opened up the scoring with six unanswered goals.  The game also saw some physical play with a few penalties and a near scrap that broke out in front of the Curves goal, which drew offsetting penalties.

"The refs did a great job keeping the game in control," explained Curves defensemen Darren Cahoon.  It was a night of revenge for Cahoon against his Law classmates as the Curves had fallen to the Law team in last years match up.

Mike McKee and Kai Boehme also netted goals for the Curves.

The Curves last game of the semester is Saturday, November 28th at 2:30 pm as they take on the WCVM Vipers.

Boehme, Russell come up big in tie

SASKATOON (AP)—No breather for the Liberal Curves, but they were able to hold on for the tie.

The Curves got an unassisted goal from Kai Boehme on his birthday, built a two-goal lead and held on to tie the STU-pendous X-men 2-2 on Monday night.

“You never relax,” said Curves Boehme, whose goal put the Curves up by two. “It doesn’t matter where teams are in the standings. You still have to play tough.”

The X-men’s second goal of the game, half way into the final period, pulled them to 2-2 before the Curves held on behind goalie Paul Russell, who made numerous saves to pull out the tie.

One of Russell’s best saves of the night came in the final period with an X-men player on a breakaway when he stuck out the left pad to deny the forward.

“Russell made the saves when we needed him. And for the most part we did a good job of keeping the rebounds to a minimum and not giving up too many second chances,” said Curves defenseman and Captain McKee, who helped setup the first goal.

McKee threw a shot towards the net, teammate Danny Robertson deflected the shot on goal and Brad Williams cleaned up the rebound to put the Curves up one early in the second period.

“We let it unravel a little bit,” Don van der Lee said. “I don’t know if we were letting up or just getting tired. They scored that first goal and that gave them some life. At 2-1 it’s a ball game.”

The Curves next game is this Saturday at 10:00 PM as they match up against long time rivals the LAW 2 team.  For Curves fans it is Rock The Red night so be sure to show your support by wearing red!
